The July 13 edition of The Baysider weekly newspaper includes a story about a recent summer enrichment trip to visit historic landmarks across southern New England. The article summarizes the late June trip to Newport and Pawtucket, Rhode Island, and Amesbury and Lowell, Massachusetts. Students toured historical landmarks, visited museums and learned about the Industrial Revolution in New England's mill cities as well as the region's whaling and boatbuilding history.
Veteran History teachers Mike Folan and Russ Troendle planned the trip and accompanied the students on the two-day, overnight journey. This is the third summer in a row that the two teachers have taken students on a similar trip, during the week after the last day of school. Troendle said, "Before the pandemic, Prospect Mountain High School had a tradition of taking students on longer road trips to study American History in different parts of the country. As we have emerged from the pandemic, we've been able to use federal relief funds to continue that tradition on a smaller scale."
Superintendent Tim Broadrick said, "When I first visited Prospect, I heard about these History Club road trips, and they were one of the things about the school that intrigued me. The most impactful learning often takes place outside of the classroom. I hope we can resume and expand this tradition for students in future years."
